Several studies have confirmed that having the correct amounts of beneficial fatty acids in our diet decreases the risk of heart disease. In our modern diet, it is common to get a fatty acid ratio that is far from beneficial. If we want to help our hearts, we need to make sure that we get all sorts of beneficial acids and in the right proportions. One way of getting more of a beneficial fatty acid known as omega 3 in your diet is to eat more fatty fish and flax seed oil.
Earlier, flax seed was a common part of the diet in Europe, North America and many parts of Asia. This herb was not only grown for human consumption; its fibres were also highly important since they were used to make linen. If you want to enjoy the benefit of flax seed oil, you can for instance start by including it one you make muffins. Flax seed has a nice nutty taste that works well in most muffin recipes. It is important to ground the flax seeds before you use them in your muffins, since whole flax seeds will pass through the body without opening. If you want your body to be able to extract the beneficial fatty acids from the seed you have to open up the seed by grinding it. You can use an ordinary coffee grinder.
