Feisty fish!
Guppies, Mollies, Platys and the ever present Neon tetra are beautiful and gracious in the aquarium, but once you have gained some more experience as a fish keeper you should definitely take a look at they myriad of other fish species available in the aquarium trade. There are many aquarists who prefer sturdy and docile beginner species, but there are also many aquarists that want to keep more and more demanding species to increase their skills.
If you want something more demanding, you can for instance start keeping aggressive fish species. By learning how to handle aggressiveness in the aquarium you will be able to keep a wide range of extremely beautiful and fascinating fish species, such as African and American cichlids. The convict cichlid (Cryptoheros nigrofasciatus) is for instance an excellent choice if you want a tough fish that readily spawns in captivity and displays mesmerizing parental care. If you want a really beautiful cichlid, you can also opt for the Texas cichlid (Herichthys cyanoguttatus).
The Texas cichlid is the only cichlid native to the United States. It lives it the Rio Grande region of southern Texas and northern Mexico and is quite an aggressive little fellow, especially during the breeding period. A well decorated aquarium that is big enough is a must if you want to keep this species.
